We are living in a world of computing. Computers play a vital role in
almost every field in one way or the other. For the proper operation of a
computer, operating system is one of the essential things. We have a variety of
operating systems like Windows, Linux, Mac, etc. As we all know, Windows is the
most commonly used operating system by individuals. But, most of the companies
including Google and Facebook make use of open source operating systems. Linux,
a free open source OS, is the greatest gift to the computing world as it has a
number of advantages in it. Some of its advantages are given below.
The role:
The
usage of Linux operating system plays a vital role in the following areas
1. Research
and Development
2. Browsing
centers (to protect their computers from virus problem)
3. Libraries
of several institutions
4. Organizations
like Google, Wikipedia, etc.
1. Virus free:
Linux is completely viral free, because
most of the virus developers mainly focus on Windows based computers. The one
more reason for viral free environment is that .exe files cannot be executed in
Linux environment directly and to be more technical, nothing in Linux is a
self-executable.
2. Hardware independent:
Most of the Windows users cannot upgrade their
system to the latest version of the operating system because of the
incompatibility of hardware ( because of the presence of old hardware ). But,
in Linux there is not such problem. Any version will work in any hardware.
3. Available for free:
Consider a scenario that you have the pirated
( Windows ) OS on your laptop and going to go abroad. You will be caught at the
aircraft for using the pirated OS. But, Linus is freely available to all. So,
there will not be any problems.
4. Flexibility:
If you are a programmer, then you can modify
Linux to your wish. That is the power of open source. Moreover you can also
learn to write OS using the source code available.
5. Portability:
Can you believe that an OS can be carried
with you in your pen drive/CD? Yes, Linux is very compact so that it can fit
even into a compact disk. Without installing in your computer, you can test it
by running live OS from CD.
6. Least crash:
Windows users feel bad most of the times due
to system crash (system hang). But, Linux has no such problems.
7. Speed:
If you are a Windows user and use Linux now,
then I am sure that you will be admired at the speed of Linux. It takes no time
for booting and shutting down.
8. Security:
While you browse in Windows environment, many
hackers will be watching you and there is a chance of your data being theft.
All these can be done in Windows easily because of its structure. But, on Linux
there will not be such problem.
9. Multi language support:
Most of the Linux distributions are
available with multi language support functionality, which would make even a
common man to use computers. The sentences are being translated and reviewed by
people all around the world.
10. Large community:
Since Linux users and developers are available
all around the world, you can easily get whatever you wanted to do via the
forums available online.
11. No drivers required:
One more advantage of Linux over the
Windows platform is that, Linux will not annoy users by asking them to install
the commonly used device drivers.
12. All softwares at a place:
With
the Software Center, one can get any application just by a single click.
13. Well separated kernel:
Since the Kernel and the User Interface
are well separated, a lot of distributions (like Fedora, CentOS, Ubuntu) and
flavours (like Kubuntu, Edubuntu) are possible with Linux.
14. Functional software included:
When Windows is installed, the basic
software like the MS Office package are not available for you unless they are
manually installed by you, whereas LibreOffice, OpenOffice, etc. are inbuilt in
Linux.
15. Updated:
All the programming language (C, C++, etc.)
updates are first available for Linux. The old 'Turbo C++ IDE', supports
neither Exception handing nor multi-threading (which is available in C++11
standard).
Let us understand the best OS and go
with it;
let us bring a revolution in the computing world!
let us bring a revolution in the computing world!
